Ward 17 - Acute Cardiac Care Unit
The acute cardiac care unit was formed in October of 2014 and it combines the coronary care unit and the cardiology step down ward. There are 8 coronary care beds, 4 male and 4 female, and 14 cardiology beds 10 male and 4 female plus 4 side rooms. The patients that we treat have a wide range of diagnoses including NSTEMI, arrhythmias, heart failure, endocarditis and heart blocks. We work closely with the angiography department who undertake permanent pacemakers and angiograms. New members of the team will have an induction program designed for them which will include spending time in the angiography department, with the cardiac rehabilitation service, rapid access chest pain clinic and the heart failure clinic which will give staff an understanding of what additional services are provided to our patients during their stay and after discharge from the ward.
All staff coming into the acute cardiac care unit will need to be particularly interest in cardiology and for these nurses there will be the opportunity to undertake specific cardiology training in the future.
Our aim for the ward is to deliver the highest quality personalised care to our patients and to achieve this, the whole team needs to demonstrate high standards and to continually update their knowledge and skills. The care we show to our patients is also extended to the team we work with, and it is a very supportive place to work.
Data is collected every month throughout the hospital, from our patients and their relatives and the ward routinely receives 100% positive feedback.
One of our recent pieces of feedback was: “As a patient, I received care, comfort and nothing was too much trouble. I was upset and not well at all. The staff through all shifts were amazing. They comforted me and they were very patient with me”.
